If you are amongst the 40 million Americans who have apprehension about going to the dentist or have put off dental care s because of anxieties, help is on the way. Fortunately, there are several sedation dentistry treatment options available to ease your concerns.
There are several safe types of sedation including:
- Inhaled minimal sedation: You breathe nitrous oxide — otherwise known as “laughing gas” — combined with oxygen through a mask that’s placed over your nose. The gas helps you relax. Your dentist can control the amount of sedation you receive, and the gas tends to wear off quickly. This is the only form of sedation where you may be able to drive yourself home after the procedure.
- Oral sedation: Depending on the total dose given, oral sedation can range from minimal to moderate. For minimal sedation, you take a pill. Typically, the pill is Halcion, which is a member of the same drug family as Valium, and it’s usually taken about an hour before the procedure. The pill will make you drowsy, but you’ll still be awake. A larger dose may be given to produce moderate sedation. This is the type of anesthesia most commonly associated with sedation dentistry. Some people become groggy enough from moderate oral sedation to actually fall asleep during the procedure.
- Deep sedation and general anesthesia: You will get medications that will make you either almost unconscious or totally unconscious — deeply asleep — during the procedure. While you are under general anesthesia, you cannot easily be awakened until the effects of the anesthesia wear off or are reversed with medication.

Gentle Professional Cleaning
People over the age of four or five should visit their dentist for a professional teeth cleaning at least twice a year. To maintain oral health, it is very important that you stay current on the condition of your teeth so that if problems are detected, they can be treated early to avoid developing more serious issues.
At Smiles at Lakewood Ranch, we provide comfortable, gentle teeth cleanings, specifically to detect, deter and prevent gum disease. If we find a cause for concern, we may recommend a deep gum cleaning to remove tartar below the gum line, smooth out surfaces where plaque builds up and eliminate bacterial infection.
Many people put off visiting the dentist due to apprehension and fear, neglecting important dental work in the process. Prior to your treatment, you'll receive medication through an intravenous line. This will place you in a calm, relaxed state. IV sedation places the patient in a deep level of sedation - you will not be able to communicate during the procedure.
Nitrous Oxide, sometimes called “laughing gas,” is one option your dentist may offer to help make you more comfortable during certain procedures. You will be able to hear and respond to any requests or directions the dentist may have.
Your dentist will ask you to breathe normally through your nose, and within a few short minutes, you should start to feel the effects of the Nitrous Oxide. You won't fall asleep; instead, the Nitrous Oxide simply puts you at ease and eliminates any anxiety you may normally experience.
Oral sedation dentistry is a medical procedure involving the administration of oral sedative drugs, generally to facilitate a dental procedure and reduce patients' fear and anxiety. If you're afraid, anxious, or apprehensive, let your dentist at Smiles at Lakewood Ranch know; he or she will choose the right form of dental sedation for you. Call us at 941-216-3803 for an appointment.
